Maintaining comfort for patients in long-term care settings is critical to enhancing their overall well-being. Micro blood flow technology is revolutionizing the healthcare industry by improving circulation, reducing pressure points, and preventing complications such as pressure ulcers.

The Importance of Micro Blood Flow

Micro blood flow refers to the circulation of blood through the smallest vessels in the body, such as capillaries and arterioles. It plays a crucial role in delivering oxygen and nutrients to tissues while removing waste products. Inadequate blood flow can lead to tissue damage, increasing the risk of conditions like pressure ulcers.

Benefits of Micro Blood Flow Technology

  • Improved Circulation: Helps distribute pressure evenly, preventing restricted blood flow and tissue ischemia.
  • Temperature and Moisture Management: Keeps skin dry and cool, reducing irritation and discomfort, which is vital for patients who spend extended time in bed or wheelchairs.
  • Enhanced Healing: Promotes faster tissue recovery in immobile patients by ensuring a steady supply of oxygen and nutrients to the affected areas.

Real-World Applications

Healthcare facilities implementing micro blood flow technology in mattresses and seat cushions have reported significant improvements in patient outcomes. Studies suggest a reduction in pressure ulcer prevalence by over 30% when using circulation-promoting surfaces.

A unique measuring method

In order to conduct research in a professional way, Starfish of Sweden has developed a unique measuring method to measure micro blood flow on a person in laying and sitting positions. The method uses advanced measuring technology from Perimed that was originally developed for measuring micro blood flow in feet. Together with researchers from Lund Institute of Technology and developers from Perimed, we have adjusted the algorithm so that it measure also on the back of a person laying in a bed or sitting in a chair. This type of measurement hasn’t been performed before and will contribute to future research about how to increase micro blood flow in order to create new and innovative solutions for healthcare and other sectors.
